Pontiac officials react to Will Amos not seeking reelection

10 August 2021 à 12:00 am

On Sunday evening, Pontiac MP Will Amos issued a statement announcing that he would not be seeking reelection in the next federal election. The announcement came following two high-profile blunders Amos made earlier this year, appearing naked during a virtual session of parliament and getting caught urinating in a coffee cup while on another video call. In his statement on Sunday, he said that he was not closing the door on politics in the future, but added that he was seeking better work life balance.

Pontiac’s Warden Jane Toller said that she wasn’t surprised by the announcement, and wished Amos all the best in his future endeavours.

“When I heard the announcement by Will Amos I was not surprised, I understand his decision,” she said.

L’Isle aux Allumettes Mayor Winston Sunstrum called Amos a “huge supporter” for the Pontiac, pointing to the investments in high-speed internet for the region as a major accomplishment.

“Those events that happened to Will were quite unfortunate, I have a lot of empathy for him and his family,” he said.

Pontiac Conservative candidate Michel Gauthier issued a statement on August 8 regarding Amos’s announcement.

“He has spent the last six years in federal politics as the Member of Parliament for Pontiac. It is a role that puts enormous pressure on the father of a young family. This departure may have been foreseeable in light of the events of the past few months, but it does not take away from the work he has accomplished during his two terms. I wish him the best of luck and success in the new professional challenges he will choose to take on in the future,” the statement reads.
