Obstetrics and general surgery in Shawville: Specialists will be deployed in the regions

Specialist groups will be deployed across the province to reduce the interruptions of services in obstetric and general surgery especially in “at-risk” areas, including Shawville. An agreement between the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) will provide regional coverage of the services as of December 1st.

“Regional patients have the right to receive basic specialized services close to home,” said Minister of Health and Social Services Danielle McCann. “We have worked very hard to find sustainable solutions that will make it possible to avoid worrisome situations and to ensure that the patients receive the appropriate care in all regions in Quebec. “

The ministry specifies that surgeons will provide general surgical care in their community and may, if they have the necessary training, perform caesarean sections in remote sites. Emergency support mechanisms will also be deployed through teams in surgery and obstetrics. According to the MNA for Pontiac, André Fortin, this new agreement is long overdue:

For the President of the FMSQ, Diane Francoeur, “the two new agreements constitute a new model of coverage in the regions that can overcome the shortage of specialized medical personnel. ”

These measures will be rolled out gradually and will be financed from the global envelope dedicated to the remuneration of specialist doctors.
