Firewood: watch out for scams in classified ads!

Firewood: watch out for scams in classified ads!

As the winter season approaches, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is warning consumers about fake firewood ads on the internet.

The scheme is simple: scammers post enticing ads and ask for a wire deposit to book an order.

But when it comes to scheduling delivery, the sellers disappear with the money!

Since the beginning of 2026, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has received 12 complaints related to this type of fraud and victims have lost over $2,200.

And this is probably just the tip of the iceberg, as only 5-10% of victims would report fraud.

Be careful! Verify the seller’s identity, ask for references and beware of advance payment requests.

Before making a transfer, take the time to check. A little vigilance can save you money!
