Outaouais Climate Summit Announces More Than $3 Million in Climate Investments
The second Outaouais Climate Summit announced more than $3 million in investments and funding for climate initiatives as it opened Wednesday at the Université du Québec en Outaouais in Gatineau.
Organized by the Outaouais Climate Partnership, the summit brought together more than 250 representatives from businesses, institutions, community organizations and other sectors to advance regional climate action.
Among the announcements, the City of Gatineau is exploring an agreement with Enbridge Gaz Québec to convert biogas from its wastewater treatment facility into renewable natural gas. The project could generate up to $624,000 in annual revenue for the city and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The summit also unveiled plans for approximately $3 million in solar energy projects on municipal buildings, alongside $330,000 in funding to support farms implementing environmentally sustainable practices.
Other initiatives include efforts to reduce food waste at two local IGA grocery stores, support sustainable transportation, promote greener construction practices and encourage greater public participation in climate action.
The event also presented early findings from the region’s first climate action barometer. According to the survey, 76 per cent of Outaouais residents believe urgent action is needed to address climate change, while 85 per cent believe delaying action will lead to more serious consequences.
The summit continues with conferences and workshops focused on energy, sustainable buildings, transportation and food system resilience.
