CAA-Québec and the Professional Association launch a new awareness campaign
Every day, CAA-Québec patrolmen and women intervene on the roads to help motorists in difficulty. Yet, too often their safety is compromised by drivers who fail to respect the safety corridor. While most motorists instinctively slow down when they see a police car or emergency vehicle, it seems that many forget that tow trucks are also among the vehicles for which the safety corridor applies.
Tow trucks are also among the vehicles that require special attention on roads. CAA-Québec and the Association des professionnels du dépannage du Québec (APDQ) are launching an awareness campaign to remind motorists of the importance of slowing down and moving away when they encounter a tow truck in action.
Every day, patrolmen and women work along roadsides to assist motorists. Yet their safety is often compromised by drivers who do not respect the safety corridor.
The Highway Safety Code requires motorists to slow down and move as far away from a vehicle that is stopped on the side of the road when its warning lights are activated. A lane change shall also be made when conditions permit and the manoeuvre can be safely completed.
Failure to comply with this obligation may result in a fine of $200-$300, plus costs, as well as four demerit points.
With this social media campaign, CAA-Québec and the APDQ want to remind everyone that a simple action can make all the difference. The two organizations also support awareness initiatives led by the Sûreté du Québec and the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.
The message is clear: behind every tow truck is a person who works to keep motorists safe. Slowing down and leaving enough space helps protect your life.
