Fire Prevention Week : “You’re the one in charge!”

Fire Prevention Week takes place this year from October 4th to 10th, under the theme “You’re the one in charge!”

In Quebec, the statistics highlight the importance of staying vigilant. Each year, fires damage an average of 4,951 homes—about 13 homes per day. They also injure 308 people and result in the evacuation of approximately 27,000 people.

Nearly 48% of residential fires are caused by distraction or human error. Electrical appliances and power distribution equipment, for their part, are the source of heat in more than 23% of residential buildings damaged by fire.

Seniors remain particularly vulnerable: 67% of fire victims are 60 years of age or older.

The Government of Quebec therefore reminds the public of a few essential precautions: use certified electrical appliances, avoid modifying equipment, limit the use of extension cords, and, above all, ensure that smoke alarms are working properly.

It is also recommended to have an evacuation plan and to practice it regularly with all family members.

A smoke alarm remains one of the best ways to be alerted quickly when a fire breaks out. The government recommends checking that it’s working twice a year.

This week, the message is simple: prevention starts at home… and you’re the one responsible!
