Rural libraries are calling for increased funding

The BIBLIO Network of Quebec is calling on political parties to commit to addressing the funding shortfall in rural libraries.

In a press release issued today, the BIBLIO Network states that funding has not kept pace with rising costs in recent years, impacting collections and the development of new services.

According to the Network, inflation has increased by 53% in 20 years, while funding for the BIBLIO Networks has risen by only 9%, creating, according to the organization, a shortfall of approximately $3 million.

The Network also states that staffing hours in regional libraries have decreased by 17% in 20 years, while the population served and user needs have increased.

The BIBLIO Networks support libraries in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, notably by providing them with professional and technical services and documentary resources. The Quebec government acknowledges that these small municipalities often have limited human and financial resources.

Julie Blais, President of the BIBLIO Quebec Network, is therefore calling on political parties to commit to ensuring access to culture in all regions of Quebec.

The BIBLIO Quebec Network comprises 11 regional networks and works particularly with libraries in small municipalities.
