Federal bill to ban social networks for under 16s

The federal government is preparing to introduce a bill that could ban social media access for those under 16 across the country. According to information obtained by Global News, this measure would be part of the new Digital Safety Act, which is expected to be tabled in the House of Commons this week.

Following the Australian model, the proposal would require platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and Facebook to prevent those under 16 from creating or maintaining an account. Ottawa hopes this will better protect young people from cyberbullying, harmful content, and the negative effects of social media on mental health.

According to reports, some platforms could be granted an exemption if they demonstrate they provide a sufficiently safe environment for young users. The bill is also expected to include new obligations for digital companies regarding harmful content and online safety.

While several groups welcome the initiative, experts point out that age verification remains a significant challenge and that digital education must also be part of the solution.
