Agricultural stakeholders from the Outaouais gathered in Clarendon to discuss the future of the sector

Agricultural stakeholders from the Outaouais gathered in Clarendon to discuss the future of the sector

8 June 2026 à 11:53 am

Agricultural producers, food processors, and representatives of the agri-food industry in the Outaouais region gathered on June 5th in Clarendon for a regional roundtable organized by the federal MP for Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi, Sophie Chatel.

The meeting, held at Le Petit Chariot Rouge, aimed to bring together key players in the sector to discuss the issues currently affecting agriculture and agri-food in the region. Over the course of three hours, participants talked about the challenges facing the industry, as well as development opportunities that could help ensure its growth and long-term sustainability. MP Sophie Chatel reminds us of the purpose of the meeting:

“As Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Agri‑Food, I had two main goals today. First, I wanted to gather feedback as we begin negotiations this summer on the next five‑year agricultural strategic framework with the provinces. With 3.5 billion dollars invested mainly in primary agriculture, it was important for me to hear what works well and what needs improvement from Pontiac producers. My second goal was to inform the development of the upcoming Food Security Strategy, currently being prepared by the Prime Minister, and myself, the Minister of Agriculture. That’s why it was essential to hear from everyone involved in the food chain — consumers, farmers, processors, food banks, and wholesalers — to better understand their perspectives on what a strong food security system should look like.”

The discussions also focused on food processing, the competitiveness of agricultural businesses, and regional food sovereignty—issues that are increasingly concerning for producers and stakeholders in the sector.

At a time when the agricultural sector must contend with rising production costs, climate change, and challenges related to food supply, this meeting allowed participants to share their concerns and perspectives on the future of the industry.

Media outlets were invited to attend the roundtable, including CHIP 101.9, which was on-site for the occasion. All participants were able to speak freely while encouraging open and constructive dialogue, with no public attribution of comments made during the discussions. MP Sophie Chatel appeared very pleased with how the roundtable unfolded:

“As the MP for Pontiac, I’m fortunate to represent a community that is deeply generous and engaged. Their feedback is incredibly valuable to me — it truly helps me in my role, and it helps Canada as a whole, since many of our local challenges are shared across the country. For any elected official, it’s essential to go directly to the source and hear on the ground how national policies affect people’s lives.”

This initiative also helped highlight the priorities of the agricultural and agri-food sector in the Outaouais, at a time when several national-level strategic decisions could have significant repercussions for producers and businesses in the region in the years ahead.
