Highway 50 continues to make headlines in the Outaouais
While many drivers consider it one of the most dangerous highways in Quebec, Highway 50 continues to raise concerns.
With its long stretches of single‑lane roadway, risky passing maneuvers, and steadily increasing traffic between Gatineau and Mirabel, the 50 has unfortunately been the site of numerous serious accidents over the years.
Elected officials and residents have long been calling for the full twinning of the highway to improve safety. Some sections have already been widened, but several segments remain single‑lane, particularly between Lachute and Gatineau.
Experts remind drivers that caution is still essential: excessive speed, distracted driving, and dangerous passing maneuvers are among the main causes of collisions on this route.
The Quebec government is gradually continuing improvement work, but for many users in the region, the feeling of insecurity on Highway 50 remains very present.
