Protégez-Vous reveals its findings on sunscreens

14 May 2026 à 2:31 pm

With the arrival of warmer weather, Protégez-Vous unveils its new ranking of the best sunscreens available on the market across the country. After analyzing 19 products sold in pharmacies, supermarkets, and specialty stores, the team concluded that several affordable options offer excellent protection against UV rays.

According to the test results, there is currently no scientific evidence showing that sunscreens are harmful to health. On the contrary, exposure to UV rays remains the leading cause of skin cancer. Catherine Crépeau, journalist and editor in charge of the report at Protégez-Vous.

“These rumors that we see on the Internet worries us too, so we analyzed 19 different SPF 30 and 50 sunscreens that are found in stores, some with chemical filters, which absorb UV rays, and others with physical filters, which reflect the UV rays. The majority of the products on the market do their job by protecting us from UV rays. Speaking with experts, there is no scientific proof that sunscreens are harmful to our health. However, it’s best to protect ourselves with sunscreen since we do know that the Sun can lead to skin cancer.”

The survey also reveals that price is not necessarily a guarantee of quality. Some very affordable products performed just as well, if not better, than much more expensive brands. Among the recommended products, Banana Boat’s Ultra Sport lotion stands out at a cost of about $1.65 per application, while Hawaiian Tropic’s Silky Touch lotion is also among the top choices.

The test also highlights that many consumers apply an insufficient amount of sunscreen, which significantly reduces the protection advertised on the label. Catherine Crépeau again.

“We can’t rely on the prices of sunscreens. We found some great options that cost about $1.65 per application, whereas as others cost about $11 per application. Furthermore, many people don’t apply enough sunscreen. One application equals to around 1 tbsp. of product for a body part and it is recommended to reapply it throughout the day. “

For consumers who want to buy Quebec-made products, two private-label brands stand out: Personnelle sunscreen lotion and Biomedic’s Ultra Sunscreen Lotion, both available for less than $3 per application.

The full test results are available on the Protégez-Vous website.
