More and more Canadian artists are questioning the viability of touring, as travel-related costs continue to rise and audiences become more cautious with their spending.
According to the Canadian Live Music Association, performance fees and merchandise sales typically account for more than 75% of musicians’ annual income. However, in the current climate, reaching the break-even point is becoming increasingly difficult.
Rising transportation, accommodation, and food costs are putting significant pressure on tour budgets. Added to this is a certain hesitation among audiences, who are cutting back on outings and entertainment spending, directly affecting venue attendance.
As a result, many artists are having to rethink their plans, reduce the number of shows, or even cancel tours altogether. This reality is raising concerns about the future of the music scene and artists’ ability to make a living from their craft.
Could this be the beginning of the end for artist touring?
