Rising water levels on the Ottawa River: municipalities urge caution
The municipalities of Mansfield-et-Pontefract and Fort-Coulonge are urging residents to exercise caution following an update to hydrological forecasts released on April 15th.
According to available data, the level of the Ottawa River could reach approximately 107.85 meters by April 17th, representing an increase of about 80 centimeters from the current level. Meanwhile, the flow of the Coulonge River is expected to rise to nearly 400 cubic meters per second.
Although these levels remain below minor flood thresholds, municipal authorities believe the situation requires increased vigilance, particularly in areas known to be vulnerable during the spring freshet.
Municipal teams report that they are prepared and are closely monitoring the situation. Daily updates will be conducted over the coming days, although current forecasts only cover a four-day period.
Residents living near the water are encouraged to secure any objects that could be carried away, avoid at-risk areas, and stay informed through official channels. Sand and sandbags are also being made available to citizens who wish to take preventive measures.
The municipalities thank residents for their cooperation and remind them that any new information will be communicated promptly.
