Fire prevention: outdoor fire pits properly regulated in the MRC of Pontiac
With the arrival of spring, many residents of the MRC of Pontiac are once again enjoying their outdoor fire pits. But caution is needed: to ensure safety and compliance, specific rules must be followed. Outdoor fire pits must be equipped with a spark guard with openings no larger than one centimeter, placed on a stable surface, and at a safe distance from any combustible materials. Fire pits fueled by natural gas, propane, or electricity, as well as certain approved devices, are also permitted, provided that manufacturer instructions are followed and a minimum distance of one meter from any flammable material is maintained.
Non-compliant fire pits, such as those without a chimney cap or spark guard, are prohibited. Between November 15th and April 1st, open-air fires are allowed under certain conditions, following verification of local requirements. However, no fires are permitted if the fire hazard rating is “Extreme,” and burn permits may be denied during these periods. Residents can check the current fire hazard rating and recommendations on the SOPFEU website.
Additional conditions apply to open-air fires: maintain safe distances from buildings and fences, avoid untreated organic materials such as wood, branches, and brush, and ensure wind speeds do not exceed 20 km/h.
By following these simple but strict rules, residents can safely enjoy their outdoor fire pits while reducing the risk of fire. Prevention remains the best protection for safeguarding families and property in the MRC of Pontiac.
