End of Mandatory Winter Tires as of March 16th

End of Mandatory Winter Tires as of March 16th

20 March 2026 à 9:55 am

Since March 16, motorists in Quebec are no longer required to have winter tires on their vehicles. This measure marks the end of the mandatory period put in place to ensure road safety during the colder months.

Despite the lifting of the requirement, experts stress the importance of exercising caution before changing tires. Weather conditions in Quebec can remain unpredictable in the spring, with snowfall or icy conditions still possible.

It is recommended to wait until temperatures remain consistently above 7°C for several weeks before installing summer tires, in order to ensure optimal road grip.

Authorities are therefore urging drivers to base their decision on actual road and weather conditions, rather than relying solely on the date.

Even though the legal requirement has been lifted, safety remains the top priority. Switching tires too early could increase the risk of accidents if winter conditions return unexpectedly.

In short, while winter tires are no longer mandatory after March 16, caution is still advised for all motorists.
