A $31.3 million investment to modernize Quebec’s public libraries
The Quebec government will invest $31.3 million in the Public Library Digital Strategy, an initiative aimed at fundamentally transforming the services offered to residents across the province.
The announcement was made during the closed-door budget meeting, in which the Association des bibliothèques publiques du Québec (ABPQ) (Quebec public library Association) participated for the first time in its history. This invitation is seen as recognition of the central role libraries play in Quebec’s cultural and educational ecosystem.
The funding will help accelerate the implementation of a project launched in 2021, which aims to adapt libraries to today’s digital landscape. The strategy includes the development of new digital services and improved access to resources for users.
The ABPQ, along with its partners, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) and the Réseau BIBLIO du Québec (RBQ), welcomed this announcement. According to industry stakeholders, this investment is a key driver in ensuring the sustainability and relevance of public libraries amid technological transformation.
Full details of the project were published in a press release issued following the budget announcement.
