With the arrival of winter, many Quebecers enjoy activities on frozen lakes and rivers, such as skating, ice fishing, and hockey. However, authorities remind the public that ice can be treacherous and poses significant risks.

Experts recommend checking the ice thickness before engaging in any activity: at least 10 cm for individual skating, 12 to 15 cm for light vehicles, and more for snowmobiles and heavier vehicles. Ice conditions can vary from one area to another, especially near water inlets and outlets, currents, or areas with vegetation.

It is also recommended to wear a life jacket or flotation device, go out with companions, and have a way to get out of the water in case of a fall. Never go out alone, and avoid drinking alcohol before or during activities on the ice.

Public Safety reminds the population that even ice that appears solid can crack quickly. Accidents on frozen bodies of water often occur due to carelessness or overestimating the strength of the ice.

In short, to enjoy winter safely: check the thickness of the ice, wear safety gear, stay within designated areas, and remain vigilant. Simple precautions can prevent accidents and save lives.
