Extreme Cold: Call to Reduce Electricity Use During Peak Hours

9 February 2026 à 8:42 am

Updated on 10 February 2026 à 11:17 am

Hydro-Québec is informing the public that the intense cold forecast until February 9 is placing significant pressure on the electrical grid in the area.

Due to the extremely low temperatures expected on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, the grid could reach its maximum capacity. Without a reduction in electricity use, temporary, controlled, and short-duration service interruptions may be required.

Hydro-Québec is therefore asking for the cooperation of all residents to reduce electricity consumption during peak demand hours, specifically:

  • from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

  • from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

How to help in practical ways:

  • Lower heating by a few degrees and heat only occupied rooms;

  • Postpone the use of major household appliances, such as dryers and dishwashers;

  • Use hot water outside peak hours whenever possible.

Every reduction in electricity use directly helps lower the risk of service interruptions in the area.

To ensure a rapid response if needed, a team of Hydro-Québec line workers will be stationed in the Pontiac region 24 hours a day throughout the weekend.

Hydro-Québec continues to analyze short-term solutions to reduce pressure on the grid in the region and is already working on long-term upgrades to improve service reliability.

Thank you for your cooperation. Every effort counts and is greatly appreciated.
