National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

2 February 2026 à 1:14 pm

Eating Disorders Awareness Week is an important event in Quebec, aimed at informing the public, breaking taboos, and encouraging those affected to seek help. Eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, are serious mental illnesses that can affect people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

In Quebec, it is estimated that around 250,000 people live with an eating disorder. Among high school students, the rate of diagnosed eating disorders has risen sharply in recent years, reaching up to 5%. These disorders also have one of the highest mortality rates among mental illnesses, highlighting the urgent need for prevention and access to care.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week is primarily organized by Anorexie et Boulimie Québec (ANEB), a community organization that provides information, support, and services to those affected and their families. ANEB works in collaboration with numerous partners, including community organizations, health institutions such as CISSS and CIUSSS, and educational institutions. Together, they organize conferences, workshops, awareness campaigns, and educational activities throughout Quebec.

Lise-Andrée Massé from ANEB shares the activities planned for this very important week:

Loved ones of a person with an eating disorder can support them in several ways:

There are several warning signs to watch for. Again, Lise-Andrée Massé from ANEB says:

This week serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing the signs of eating disorders, promoting a healthy relationship with food and body image, and, most importantly, supporting those who are affected. By speaking openly about eating disorders, we help reduce stigma and foster a more informed, compassionate, and supportive society.
