Pontiac Journal Not Arriving by Mail This Week Due to Canada Post Strikes

In light of this week’s Canada Post strikes, the Pontiac Journal is notifying residents that the newspaper will not be delivered by mail this week. This disruption comes ahead of Sunday’s advance voting and the official municipal elections on November 2.

Lily Ryan, Publisher of the Pontiac Journal, explained that Canada Post’s deliveries this week exclude items categorized as promotional materials, including flyers, pamphlets, and local community newspapers. This measure affects deliveries nationwide.

“Listeners and readers of the Pontiac Journal—which normally reaches every household in the MRC Pontiac and the Municipality of Pontiac—won’t be receiving their copy by mail this week,” said Ryan. “They can, however, pick it up anywhere in their neighbourhood—at local convenience stores, municipal offices, gas stations, and more.

From what I understand, because of the rotating strikes, Canada Post workers are only delivering addressed mail, not what’s categorized as ad mail. Somehow, newspapers like ours got lumped into that category. Even though we pay to ensure that every household gets a free copy, the postal union has decided not to deliver the paper this week.”

Despite the mail disruption, the Pontiac Journal staff has gone to great lengths to ensure that residents and voters have access to the publication. Ryan shared that the paper was delivered in large quantities to local stores, where it can be picked up by readers. She encourages residents to grab a copy and help distribute it to their neighbors.

“My message to residents is threefold,” said Lily Ryan. “First, if you can, please help by bringing a newspaper to your neighbours. Don’t be shy about taking a stack from a local store or calling us at the Pontiac Journal to ask for more — we can deliver extra copies to you. We just want to make sure everyone has access to the paper.

Second, to Canada Post workers and union members — if you feel inclined, please slip a copy of the Journal into the mail you’re already delivering. We’re planning to place papers in and around post offices across the region.

And third, I encourage everyone to engage — read your paper, listen to the local radio, and make an informed vote. Talk to your neighbours so that together we can strengthen our community and keep our democracy vibrant.”

The 28-page edition of the Pontiac Journal is dedicated to the upcoming municipal elections, featuring detailed coverage of candidates, their platforms, and voting instructions. It also includes information on voter registration for both advance and regular voting.

The Journal’s final edition before the 2025 local elections is now available at stores across the MRC Pontiac and the Municipality of Pontiac. It can also be accessed online via the Pontiac Journal website.
