2025 Municipal Election: Five Days Before Deadline, Many Positions Still Vacant
2025 Municipal Election: Five Days Before Deadline, Many Positions Still Vacant
Individuals wishing to run in the upcoming municipal elections on November 2 have until this Friday, October 3, to submit their candidacy. In some municipalities, there are still four, and in certain cases even five or six, positions with no candidates to date. A number of municipalities may also see mayors elected by acclamation. At present, about ten municipalities have received only a single candidacy for the mayor’s office. These include Chichester (incumbent Donald Gagnon), Sheenboro (incumbent Doris Ranger), L’Isle-aux-Alumettes (incumbent Corey Spence), Litchfield (incumbent Colleen Larivière), Mansfield-et-Pontefract (incumbent Sandra Armstrong), Fort-Coulonge (Pierre Cyr), Clarendon (incumbent Ed Walsh), and Portage-du-Fort (incumbent Lynne Cameron).
A first candidate has also come forward for the mayor’s office in Bryson: Éric Harrington. The same is true in Rapides-des-Joachims, where Roger Peter Lafond has submitted his candidacy.
Meanwhile, in Île-du-Grand-Calumet, no candidacies had been officially filed as of this morning. However, that situation may change, as outgoing mayor Jean-Louis Corriveau told CHIP 101.9 that he intends to wait until his return from the Fédération québécoise des municipalités (FQM) convention before submitting his papers. The event concluded on Saturday, and Corriveau is expected to seek re-election.
If only one candidate comes forward before Friday, October 3, at 4:30 p.m., that person will be elected by acclamation.
