Literacy in Quebec: A Concerning Situation

Literacy in Quebec: A Concerning Situation

4 September 2025 à 1:38 pm

International Literacy Day, celebrated each year on September 8, is a day proclaimed by UNESCO to raise public awareness of the importance of literacy as a cornerstone of human dignity, social justice, and sustainable development. The day aims to highlight the need for education that is accessible to all and to celebrate the power of reading and writing in creating a fairer and more peaceful future.

Currently in Quebec, one in five people struggles significantly with understanding and using written text. Needless to say, the situation is alarming. Patrick Lutzy, Chair of the Board of the Literacy Foundation, provides an overview of the current state of literacy:

“Currently in Quebec, more than one in two people—52% of the population—do not reach Level 3 literacy, which is necessary to fully function in our society.”

The consequences of illiteracy are numerous and affect many aspects of the lives of those impacted. Once again, Patrick Lutzy explains:
“The consequences are felt at every level, including the pursuit of education, and consequently access to employment, the economy, and more.”

The Literacy Foundation offers a wide range of resources to help develop your literacy skills, as well as those of your family, children, or clients. It’s never too late to learn! Whether you want to learn to read or improve your existing skills, a variety of resources are available to you.

The full (French-language) interview with Patrick Lutzy, conducted by Nathalie Vasiloff, is now available here.
