Archaeological Excavations Beginning in the Village of Quyon This September

2 September 2025 à 3:09 pm

The organization Les Amis du Sault-des-Chats has announced the return of public archaeological excavations through the Archéo-Pontiac Project, which will take place in the heart of Quyon, in the Municipality of Pontiac, from September 27 to October 7, 2025.

This community-driven initiative will explore the long-forgotten former Quyon Agricultural Fairgrounds, located at the confluence of the Ottawa and Quyon rivers. The site holds the potential to reveal overlooked chapters of Outaouais history. The event is free of charge and invites all history and heritage enthusiasts to help unearth traces of the past.

Schedule

  • September 27–28: Public archaeological excavation weekend

  • October 1–2: Reserved for local school groups

  • October 3–5: Public archaeological excavation weekend

  • October 6–7: Reserved for local school groups

Activities will include public excavations, artifact-cleaning workshops, guided tours, historical interpretation, and networking with regional heritage experts.

“This is a unique opportunity for citizens to discover the history of their territory, handle real artifacts, and contribute to the preservation of our collective memory,” said a member of the Amis du Sault-des-Chats team.

The excavations will take place at the Quyon municipal park, next to the Quyon Community Centre at 2 Ferry Street, where on-site parking will be available. All activities are free and open to everyone.

Les Amis du Sault-des-Chats is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the heritage, history, and natural environment of the Sault-des-Chats sector in the Ottawa River watershed.
