Sophie Chatel Welcomes Mark Carney’s Announcement in Support of the Forestry Sector
The Member of Parliament for Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi, Sophie Chatel, welcomed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement aimed at strengthening and modernizing Canada’s softwood lumber industry. The plan includes up to $700 million in loan guarantees to support the restructuring and modernization of companies, as well as $50 million for the training and upskilling of more than 6,000 workers.
“It has now become almost impossible to operate without government support during this very uncertain period with Donald Trump.”
The MP for Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi, Sophie Chatel, noted that these measures will support existing businesses, but emphasized that the forestry sector has been heavily affected in recent months.
“Recently, I have worked extensively with Louisiana-Pacific, as they were able to benefit from agreements with Service Canada to help fund part of their workforce.”
