Southwest Bristol wins 48th Shawville Community Bonspiel
The 48th edition of the Shawville Curling Club’s Community Bonspiel wrapped up on February 8, with veteran skip Joe Morris claiming his second title in a row.
The winning squad Southwest Bristol, made up of Morris, Third Peter Haughton, Second Carson Rusenstrom and Lead Jennifer Haughton, hoisted the prestigious Toilet Seat Trophy Saturday night.
Morris, who’s curled for close to 50 years, said that he really enjoys showing some newer curlers the ropes at an event that brings the whole community together.
Anyone that’s played in the tournament knows how hard it is to come out on top against dozens of experienced teams, but Morris was nonchalant.
This year’s bonspiel was dedicated to Tom “Bolo” Fraser, a long-time member and volunteer who spent many hours keeping the ice plant running over the years. Attendance was down slightly this year, with 42 teams participating in 7 divisions, with games spread out over the last two weekends. The annual event is the club’s biggest fundraiser in the calendar.
