The Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ) published its regional panorama of Quebec on November 4, which is a socio-economic portrait of the 17 administrative regions and the regional county municipalities (MRCs) that constitute them.

The panorama presents eleven aspects of administrative regions: demography, labour market, education, regional GDP, disposable income per capita, living conditions of families, land value, investments, tourist accommodation, the mining sector and electric transportation.

Several sections present data that allow a look at the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic in the regions of Quebec.

The 2021 edition also provides detailed statistics tracing the recent evolution of certain key indicators at the MRC level. As in previous years, the demographics, disposable income, employment and property values of single-family residences are analyzed.

Another demographic decline for the Pontiac

The population of MRC Pontiac fell again from 14,158 in 2019 to 14,134 in 2020. The MRC Pontiac is now alone in this situation in the Outaouais, as Vallée-de-la-Gatineau, which had recorded demographic losses in the past, saw its population go from 20,547 in 2019 to 20,666 in 2020.

The other neighbouring MRC to Pontiac, the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais, saw its population increase from 51,408 to 52,616 between 2019 and 2020, one of the largest increases in Quebec. Note that the population estimates for the various geographic divisions of Quebec are the product of a collaboration between Statistics Canada and the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Note also that the inhabitants of Pontiac have the lowest disposable income per capita in the Outaouais and one of the lowest in Quebec, with an average of $24,778. Once again, the disparity between the MRC Pontiac and the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais is striking, since this MRC, which also includes the Municipality of Pontiac, has a disposable income per capita of $32,407, one of the highest in the province.
