CHSBO: Changes to the school tax system
The Québec Government intends to modify the school tax system by introducing a single tax rate for all of the administrative regions of the province. This announcement was made last Tuesday, as part of a presentation on updating of the government’s economic plan.
According to the Commission scolaire des Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais, the Government of Quebec will achieve its objectives, to put an end to the transfers of taxpayers without children to the Western Quebec School Board, to eliminate the inequity of the school tax, to lighten the tax burden on taxpayers and to maintain the level of funding of school boards.
The Minister of Finance and the Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports will consult school boards to proposing the establishment of a single regional rate based on the lowest effective tax rate for each region as well as a basic exemption from the tax.
