Non-essential travel ban in Ontario in effect today

19 April 2021 à 12:00 am

The increase in COVID-19 cases in Ontario will have an impact on the consumption habits of Pontiacers, since Ontario Premier Doug Ford decided on Friday to ban interprovincial travel, a measure that will be in effect April 19. Later in the evening on Friday (April 16), Quebec also announced the closure of its border with Ontario. Quebec’s Minister of Public Security, Geneviève Guilbault, mentioned via her Twitter account that the goal was to limit the spread of variants.

People who have to cross borders to go to work, for medical care or to transport goods will be allowed, as will first nations people, who have treaty rights. Ontario Provincial Police officers will be on interprovincial access roads to check vehicles shortly after midnight local time. Details for Quebec should be announced shortly by Minister Guilbault.

Public health in Ontario said on Friday it had counted 4,812 new infections, a new high. By comparison, Quebec recorded 1527 cases on Friday.
