The Québec Solidaire candidate for the Pontiac, Mike Owen Sebagenzi, stopped by CHIP 101.9’s studio yesterday (September 28), appearing on our French-language morning show Bonjour Pontiac. Following that appearance, he sat down for a conversation in English as well.

He said that over the course of his first campaign, he was surprised by how many people in the Pontiac know each other.

When asked about his party’s policy in regards to housing in a rural region like the Pontiac, Sebagenzi said that social housing was needed in the area, as well as measures to limit the amount that rent can be increased.

Sebagenzi also spoke about the recent announcement that the Dental clinic in Shawville would be closing on September 29. He said that it provides a perfect example of why services like dentistry should be managed publicly, instead of by private business.

Sebagenzi was asked about the governing CAQ party’s stance on immigration, which came to the fore at the start of the campaign when Premier Legault had to offer an apology for some of his statements about immigrants. Sebagenzi, who immigrated with his family from Burundi to Quebec, said that their vision is “profoundly disconnected from the reality on the ground.”

The full interview with Sebagenzi (13m20) is available here.
