Next week Petawawa soldiers will be briskly walking the roads of the Netherlands in the world’s largest march. Eleven personnel, who will take part in the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen (Nigh-ma-han) from July 17 to 20, departed from the base Thursday afternoon.
While Nijmegen (Nigh-ma-han) teams have traditionally been deployed by base or brigade units in the past, this marks the first time that the Area Support Unit has sent a contingent to represent the entire garrison at CFB Petawawa.
This marks the 60th year that Canada has marched at Nijmegen. The Marches require that military entrants complete the four-day 160-kilometre route in combat uniform, carrying a minimum rucksack load of 10-kilograms.
The event annually draws over 40,000 marchers from 50 different nations, including several NATO partners including the U.S., France, Britain and Germany, and over one million spectators. In addition to the CFB Petawawa squad, the Canadian Forces is sending 12 other teams to the event.
