No “ Hay East” campaign is needed in Eastern Ontario at this time, says the co-founder of Hay West which 10 years ago delivered 64,000 big bales of feed to drought-stricken farmers in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Payback isn’t required, said Wyatt McWilliams of low-key comments circulating in the regional farming community that it would be nice to see the favour returned.

Although Ontario agriculture minister Ted McMeekin this week triggered the existing drought relief framework in conjunction with the federal government, McWilliams insisted the situation in Eastern Ontario hasn’t reached crisis proportions.

He recalled visiting western farms in 2002 when crops were turning to dust in the fields, a far cry from conditions in greater Ottawa where many crops may still be salvaged.
