Quebec forest fires up by 30 per cent
Mid-way through the two-week construction holiday, Quebec’s forest fire protection agency, the SOPFEU, is reminding people to be cautious while on vacation.
Open-air camp fires are banned in or near forests in several northern sectors of the province, including in Abitibi-Temiscamingue and in the Mauricie.
Several forest fires have been blamed on human activity this season. About 24 forest fires were active on Sunday. So far this year there have been 571 forest fires, which is about 30 per cent higher than the average during the same period of the year over the last 10 years.
