Vandalism on the cycloparc PPJ

In a press release, the Pontiac MRC described the recent acts of vandalism on the cycloparc PPJ as the last straw and that the Council will appeal to the Sûreté du Québec to enforce the law before a serious accident occurs.

Broken gates, drivers spinning their wheels to pitch gravel onto the cycling surface from the trail’s edge, or to dig furrows between the gate openings where cyclists pass to access the trail, are among recent nuisances which seem to have no other objective than to inconvenience cyclists and eat away at the MRC’s maintenance budgets. However, the Pontiac MRC points out that these acts of vandalism are likely to be much more serious than mere material loss.

Deputy Director of Pontiac RCM Gabriel Lance explained that “Open gates are an invitation for any motorized vehicles to venture onto the path, which endangers the lives of users. We’re lucky we’ve not had a serious injury to date”.

The MRC Council reacted by mandating Warden Raymond Durocher to work with the Sûreté du Québec, in order to find solutions and enforce the current regulations. The Warden said “Obviously the threat of fines alone is not enough to keep motorized vehicles off the bike path,” Raymond Durocher recognizes the challenge of monitoring 92 km long trail.
