The start of the forest fire season: 2 fires in the MRC Pontiac

18 May 2018 à 12:00 am

A forest fire was sparked yesterday with enough intensity and force that SOPFEU step in to help.

Yesterday afternoon, the brush fire broke out on Highway 148 near the Wilson Road intersection just outside Bryson. At the time this news report was written, municipal firefighters were on the scene putting out the blaze with SOPFEU there to assist them. No buildings were affected by the wildfire.

There was also a fire in the Ladysmith area of the municipality of Thorne. The fire was quickly controlled thanks to the combined efforts of municipal firefighters.

On top of the other 2 fires, another one was sparked at around 1pm yesterday in the municipality of La Pêche, on Edelweiss Road, forcing the evacuation of a dozen residences.

The fire risk varies from high to very high in the Pontiac and in most regions across Quebec this week. Under these circumstances, SOPFEU recommends avoiding burning brush. Composting and green waste collection remains the best solution for disposing of garbage collected during spring cleanups. Real-time information on risks and fires in activity is available via SOPFEU’s mobile application.

SOPFEU also reminds us that spring conditions are ripe for outdoor fires at the edge of forests and close to municipalities. According to SOPFEU, about 20 fires broke out in the province last weekend, all man made.

Since the beginning of the season, 60 fires have occurred in Quebec. For more information visit www.sopfeu.qc.ca
