Pontiac MP William Amos participated yesterday in the opening panel for PaperWeek 2018, an annual conference of the pulp and paper industry in Canada, held in Montreal. He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to support the forestry industry by investing in research to develop new products and creating economic opportunities for Aboriginal communities and rural communities.

Mr. Amos discussed federal initiatives in making the Canadian economy greener. Canada’s forestry sector employs over 200,000 people and contributes more than $ 21 billion to the gross domestic product. In the riding of Pontiac, the forestry industry is an important economic sector that has marked the social, environmental, and economic culture of the region, according to a release issued by the office of Mr. Amos.

This industry is fundamentally different from other natural resource sectors in its carbon mitigation potential, be it high the quality of sustainable wood products, bioenergy and bioproducts production, as well as the sustainable and extensively sustainable operations. Emerging technologies represent the future of the Canadian pulp and paper sector and will enable it to remain competitive while reducing its environmental impact.

For this reason, the federal government has launched the $ 155-million Clean Growth Program that will fund clean technology projects in the energy, mining and forestry sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental outcomes.
