The gradual return of baseball and soccer starting June 8

5 June 2020 à 12:00 am

Starting June 8, team sports like soccer, baseball or hockey can resume in the form of outdoor training.

This gradual recovery will have to comply with the directives of the Directorate General of Public Health, as explained by the Minister for Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women, Isabelle Charest.

Sports federations have been responsible for providing guides for resuming activities to athletes and their members. Initially, the activities will take the form of supervised training, or skills competitions. Adaptations will be made so that the practice of team sports allows everyone to remain safe.

Regarding the resumption of matches for team sports, they could resume at the end of June, subject to the approval of guides prepared by sports federations by the Directorate General of Public Health.

Certain sports federations, including Soccer Quebec, Baseball Quebec and Hockey Quebec have prepared recovery protocols which will be analyzed by the General Directorate of Public Health. The national director of public health, Dr Horacio Arruda, has also insisted on the trust that Quebecers must place in the people who organize these sports.

Access to outdoor pools and other activities allowed again
The government also confirmed on Thursday that authorized outdoor activities may be carried out in public and private outdoor swimming pools open to the public, play modules or using outdoor training equipment made available to the public.

Supervised and guided activities will also be permitted again, such as supervised training for individual sports and guided outdoor outings. This reopening phase also allows local competitions to be held outside for individual sports provided that they allow for the respect of a physical distance of two meters between people. In this regard, Public Health wishes to reiterate that non-essential travel from one region to another remains not recommended.
