The ban on open fires in the Outaouais has been lifted

2 June 2020 à 12:00 am

It is once again possible to have open fires in the Outaouais.

La Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU) announced the partial lifting of the ban on open fires on Sunday afternoon, which had been in effect since mid-April, given the weather conditions which evolved and the change of season in several regions. The decision was made in collaboration with the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP).

“As summer approaches, with the foliage of trees and shrubs and the appearance of greenery, as well as the increase in relative humidity, the risks associated with open fires decrease in several regions, which allows the MFFP to lift part of the ban which has been in force since mid-April, ” mentioned the SOPFEU in a press release.

This ban on open fires also helps preserve the operational capacity of SOPFEU and that of municipal fire safety services during the pandemic, by limiting the risk of the virus spreading when firefighters respond to alerts. The ban remains in effect in the territories that still have spring conditions in the forest floor, namely certain sectors of Nord-du-Québec, Côte-Nord, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Abitibi- Témiscamingue, Mauricie, Capitale-Nationale, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspérie-Iles-de-la-Madeleine and the Chaudière-Appalaches region.
