Yesterday was Valentine’s Day, a day that celebrates love. L’EntourElle, which offers services to teenage girls and women who live or have lived in an abusive relationship, took advantage of the holiday to put out some statistics about spousal abuse. According to 2015 Québec public security statistics, all police services in Quebec recorded nearly 20,000 violent offenses, that were committed by a spouse or partner.

These represent nearly one third of all crimes committed against a person, with women representing 78% of victims. Comparing that amount to abductions, where woman represent 100% of victims. Women also represent 97.4% of sexual assault victims, 96.9% of sequestration victims, 91.3% of intimidation victims and 87.5% of victims of assault and harassment.

L’EntourElle reminds us that violence is not only physical, but also verbal, psychological, sexual and financial. L’EntourElle reminds us of the importance of breaking the silence, and that L’EntourElle offers services to this end.
