Local theatre troupe the Pontiac Community Players (PCP) announced on Saturday that they recently attained non-profit status for their organization. The new designation will allow them to conduct a much wider range of activities, according to long-time member Greg Graham.

Craig Young, another long-time member, explained that they had recently completed the first steps of becoming a non-profit, registering with the government and creating a bank account. He said that they still have a lot of work to do, from coming up with an inventory of costumes to creating committees to oversee certain tasks.

As part of the announcement, the cast of the Community Players’ upcoming production “Steel Magnolias” performed a brief scene for the assembled media and elected officials. The play is a comedy-drama by Robert Harling about the friendships of a group of women in Louisiana.

Val Twolan-Graham, a relative newcomer to the PCP with more than 30 years experience as a drama teacher, explained that she had been trying to put the show together since 2019, but COVID-19 had seriously complicated their plans.

The play will be performed at the Pontiac High School auditorium on March 9, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. as well as March 12 at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Hursty’s Restaurant in downtown Shawville.

Pontiac MNA André Fortin was in attendance and announced that his office would be donating $1,000 to the players to get their bank account up and running.
