Living as a visible minority in the Pontiac

10 June 2020 à 12:00 am

On Friday June 5, thousands of people took to the streets of downtown Ottawa marching in solidarity against anti-black racism and police brutality.

Among those in attendance and representing the Pontiac was Makase MacIntosh, who’s mother is from Angola, Africa, and father is from English decent. Makase is from one of the few families in the Pontiac who are a visible minority and explained why attending the protest was important to her.

She also explained what it was like for her growing up in the Pontiac with no role models from the Black Community.

Earlier last week, Makase had written a post on her Facebook profile about how she felt about systematic racism not only in the Pontiac but in Canada. In the comments of that post many Pontiacers questioned her on how they could help combat racism in the community. This is how she would like the citizens of the Pontiac help in the fight against racism towards the different minorities.

The link to her post is available here and the full interview with Makase MacIntosh is available here.
