The candidate for the Green Party of Quebec in the recently concluded provincial election, Pierre Cyr, stopped by CHIP 101.9 studio to discuss his first campaign. Finishing with 616 votes (2.16%), Cyr was slightly below the Green’s candidate in 2018, the late Roger Fleury, who finished with 919 (3.33%). Nevertheless, Cyr said he was satisfied with his first campaign.

Across the rest of the province, the Greens had one of their worst finishes in the past 20 years, ending up with 31,194 votes (0.76%), which is a steep decline from the 2018 election (67,870 votes or 1.69%), but up slightly from 2014 (23,163 votes or 0.55%).

Green Party of Quebec performance since 2003
Year Leader Number of votes %
2003 Richard Savignac 16,975 0.4%
2007 Scott McKay 152,885 3.9%
2008 Guy Rainville 70,993 2.2%
2012 Claude Sabourin 43,394 1%
2014 Alex Tyrrell 23,163 0.5%
2018 Alex Tyrrell 67,870 1.7%
2022 Alex Tyrrell 31,054 0.76%

Cyr said that he had a conversation with leader Alex Tyrrell about the future of the party, and said that he told Tyrrell that he should step down from his position. Cyr also said that he’d like the party to move away from more left-wing positions.

Tyrrell landed himself in hot water near the start of the campaign after tweeting his thoughts on the conflict in Ukraine. Back in December 2020 he paid a visit to MRC Pontiac alongside Fleury, where he demanded that the MRC change their name, calling it cultural appropriation.
