On Wednesday (September 14), the Parti Québecois candidate for the riding of Pontiac, Jolaine Paradis-Châteauneuf, paid a visit to CHIP 101.9 to discuss her candidacy and the issues facing the region, appearing live en francais on our morning show, Bonjour Pontiac between 8 and 9 a.m. Though she is not fully fluent, she agreed to an interview in English as well.

Paradis-Châteauneuf is a social worker with the CISSSO in Gatineau, and is also active in her union, but this is her first foray into provincial politics. She said that one of the reasons why she decided to participate in this election was due to her experience in the health care sector.

She said that she chose to represent the PQ because the best represent her values.

When asked what the biggest issue facing the rural section of the Pontiac was, Paradis-Châteauneuf pointed to the closure of the obstetrics unit at the Pontiac Hospital in Shawville.

Since the PQ is a sovereigntist party, she was asked what she means by Quebec sovereignty. She said that she would like to see Quebec have more say over its affairs when it comes to things like immigration.

When asked about Bill 96, the CAQ government’s overhaul of provincial language laws, she said that it didn’t go far enough and said that law 101 should be applied to Cégeps, meaning that francophones would be barred from attending English institutions.
