An employee of Desjardins Group shares the personal information of 2.9 million members

Personal information of 2.9 million members of the Caisse Desjardins was disclosed outside the organization, as announced by Desjardins on Thursday. According to the information reported by the Laval police, a Caisse employee, now terminated, made an unauthorized use of this data. The Professor of Journalism and Data Journalism at the École des Médias at the Université du Québec à Montréal, Jean-Hugues Roy, gave some tips to protect our personal information during an information leak due to a cyberattack.

According to a press release issued by Desjardins on Thursday afternoon, the relevant personal information of the individual as follows: name; first name; birth date; social security number; address; phone number; email, and some information about transactional habits and products held at Desjardins. It is also indicated that passwords, security issues and personal identification numbers (PINs) have not been compromised and the Desjardins was not the victim of a cyber attack but “illegal acts committed by a former employee”.
