$4.5M for Postsecondary Education in the Outaouais

Yesterday afternoon, the Quebec government announced an investments totaling more than $ 4.5 million in higher education in Outaouais. The money will be used to support the realization of the University of Quebec in the Outaouais (UQO) Pavilion opportunity file, to set up of a regional hub in higher education, in the development of health programs at UQO, in the addition of several technical programs and in the creation of a collegial center for technology transferring.

UQO Pavilion:
A sum of $ 2.6 million will be invested to complete the redevelopment of the UQO campus and aims to hand over the Lucien-Brault pavilion to the Portage-de-l’Outaouais School Board. Various scenarios will be analyzed, including the expansion or construction of a new pavilion on UQO lands. This step, prior to the creation of the proposal submission, is necessary for the project valued at more than 90 million dollars.

Pôle régional de l’Outaouais in higher education:
An investment of $ 500,000 has been allocated for higher education institutions in the region such as the UQO, Cégep de l’Outaouais, Cégep Heritage College) so that they can set up Enrichment projects to better the students experience in an innovative environment as a Pôle régional de l’Outaouais in higher education. The project aims to develop a synergy between higher education institutions and socio-economic players in the region with the aim of strengthening the entrepreneurial culture in the area.

Programs in healthcare at the University of Quebec in the Outaouais:
In order to promote the recruitment and retention of the workforce in the health care sector, a start-up grant of $ 500,000 will be allocated UQO to begin the first phase of program development for the year 2018-2019. UQO is working on the development of a bachelor’s degree program in kinesiology and is conducting analyzes related to pharmaceutical training. The following short term programs will also be developed: undergraduate sexual health and addictions, research methodology, and health services management at the graduate level.

technical programs:
$ 932,046 has been allocated for the acquisition of equipment as well as the floorplans for the Dietetic Techniques program at Cégep de l’Outaouais. This program will be able to accommodate 32 new students per year, starting in the fall of 2019. For the Outaouais region, this program is in addition to the three technical studies programs granted by the Minister in recent years, Architecture and Legal at Cégep de l’Outaouais and Special Education at Collège Héritage.

Creation of a college technology transfer center (CCTT):
A new technical college will be created through the Cégep de l’Outaouais and will specialize in cybersecurity. The project consists of a multitude of cybersecurity activities and developing technical assistance and IT services.
