Residents of all municipalities in Québec are invited to apply to be in the next municipal elections. A promotional campaign targeting all regions of Québec is starting today and aims to boast the interest of the public encouraging them to seek a position on municipal councils for the next general elections that will take place on November 5, 2017.

Mrs. Lise Thériault, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Minister of Public Safety and Minister responsible for the Montreal region, Mr. Martin Coiteux, and the Deputy Primer and Minister responsible for the Status of Women, today highlighted the launch of this campaign.

The Government of Quebec encourages Quebeckers from all generations, regions and cultural backgrounds to put their name forward in order to represent the diversity of Québec. Moreover, Caroline St-Hilaire, current Mayor of Longueuil, has been mandated to encourage more women to get involved in municipal politics.

The nomination period will start on September 22, 2017 and will continue until October 6, 2017. The next municipal elections will take place on November 5, 2017 in more than 1,100 municipalities. On this date, more than 8,000 elected municipal positions will be filled.

Information sessions offered by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy (MAMOT) will take place in the different regions of Quebec. They will educate people about the requirements of an elected official, the conditions of eligibility and how to apply. The dates of the sessions will be posted on the municipal election website.
